PROBATION CASE
- Criminal Traffic/ MM Probation Supervision
Probation officers proactively supervise offenders sentenced on a first or a second degree misdemeanor and/or a criminal traffic offense. Officer's develop reporting plans based on the probationer's risk level and enforce court ordered conditions. Probation officers implement the evidence based practices of motivational interviewing and skill building to educate, redirect and motivate probationers to make positive behavioral changes. Probationers are provided with outside referrals and resources to assist in their compliance of the probation. Various special conditions may be imposed by the Court and to each specific case depending on the charge. Special conditions may include but are not limited to: DUI School, Victim Impact Panel, Random Alcohol/Drug Screens, Substance Abuse Program, Anti-Theft School, Community Service Hours and work at the Lee County Sheriff's Day Work Program.
- Accreditation
The Florida Corrections Accreditation program offers the opportunity to evaluate an agency's operations against standards developed by the Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission as recommended by a workgroup which included the Association of Pretrial Professionals of Florida and the Florida Association of Community Corrections. This process allows administrative staff to upgrade the quality of the agency's programs and services. Accreditation provides a plan for an agency committed to providing services through accountability and transparency to the communities it serves. Probation standards were developed in 2016 and the Lee County Probation Department was one of the first Probation Departments to receive its Accreditation on June 20, 2017.
The benefits from the Accreditation process includes:
- Standards reinforce legislative intent
- Increases uniformity within community probation departments
- Increases interagency information sharing
- Increases integrity of criminal justice process and the agency's role, mission and vision
- Allows for independent verification of business practices, which increases probation agency accountability
- Standards foster education resulting in improvements for all parties (probationer, agency, public)
- Accreditation program may foster probation program expansion due to increased recognition and credibility
- Ensures policies and procedures are documented in writing and are held to the highest standards and accountability
