20th Judicial Circuit Probation

The Probation Department provides misdemeanor probation services for all of the criminal courts. Probation officers supervise probationers, enforcing all court ordered conditions. The mission is to promote public safety by enforcing court orders, supervising probationers and motivating positive behavioral change. The vision is to be a leader by enhancing working relationships with our criminal justice partners and utilizing evidence based practices and advancements in technology to proactively supervise, educate and redirect probationers to reduce recidivism.

You will need to report to the Lee county Probation Department and request an additional copy of your monthly written report (blue sheet). Photo identification will be required in order to receive a copy of the monthly written report. It is your responsibility to make additional copies of the report for the remaining months of probation.

You must immediately report any and all changes of address, telephone numbers, and/or change in employment to Probation.

There are two ways information can be updated:

  1. Report in person and update any and all information. Photo identification will be required for a change of address.
  2. Contact the Probation Department via phone and update any and all information with Clerical Staff or Probation Officer.

You must contact the Probation office and speak with your Probation officer. Only your Probation Officer can cancel or reschedule your Mandatory Office Appointment. Failure to appear for a Mandatory Office Appointment can result in a Violation of Probation Warrant being issued for your arrest.

Visit the Payment Information section under the county where you have probation.

You can make credit card payments over the telephone by calling the Clerk of Court. When making a payment by telephone, the credit card being used must have the defendants name on it. Make sure to specify where you want the payment to be applied to. For example: Cost of Supervision, Fines, Court Costs, etc.

To travel out of state, you must notify your probation officer of the need for the travel and obtain approval prior to leaving. Approval will depend on the circumstances of your case. To travel out of state, you will also need to obtain a Travel Permit from your Probation Officer

You must report in person to the Probation Department to obtain a travel permit. If you are not in compliance or current with the terms and conditions of your probation, a travel permit will not be issued. Leaving the State of Florida without permission and a travel permit from your Probation officer will result in a Violation of Probation Warrant being issued for your arrest.

The following information is required for travel approval:

  • Purpose of the trip
  • Name, address, and telephone number of your destination
  • Method of travel
  • Names of those individuals traveling with you
  • Proof of travel tickets or itinerary

Officers utilize motivational interviewing techniques, which include expressing empathy and understanding from a probationer’s perspective, developing discrepancy to help probationers appreciate the value of change through exploration of how they want to live their lives, rolling with resistance by accepting reluctance to change as natural and supporting self-efficacy by embracing autonomy and helping them move toward change successfully and with confidence. Cognitive behavioral skill building worksheets are applied to address the specific criminogenic needs of probationers.

Officers maintain contact in person, by phone, mail and email throughout the probation period to ensure compliance and progress toward court ordered conditions. Officers motivate, set priorities and goals, and refer probationers to outside resources to help achieve success. Officers continually modify methods to meet the needs of the probationer and provide positive guidance.

Probation officers utilize a risk instrument to identify risk to re-offend and apply the most appropriate supervision level. The Supervision Plan focuses on utilizing evidence based practices to proactively supervise, coach, educate, and redirect probationers toward positive behavioral change and reduce recidivism.

The Florida Corrections Accreditation program offers the opportunity to evaluate an agency's operations against standards developed by the Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission as recommended by a workgroup which included the Association of Pretrial Professionals of Florida and the Florida Association of Community Corrections. This process allows administrative staff to upgrade the quality of the agency's programs and services. Accreditation provides a plan for an agency committed to providing services through accountability and transparency to the communities it serves. Probation standards were developed in 2016 and the Lee County Probation Department was one of the first Probation Departments to receive its Accreditation on June 20, 2017 and was re-accredited in 2020.

The benefits from the Accreditation process includes:

  • Standards reinforce legislative intent
  • Increases uniformity within community probation departments
  • Increases interagency information sharing
  • Increases integrity of criminal justice process and the agency's role, mission and vision
  • Allows for independent verification of business practices, which increases probation agency accountability
  • Standards foster education resulting in improvements for all parties (probationer, agency, public)
  • Accreditation program may foster probation program expansion due to increased recognition and credibility
  • Ensures policies and procedures are documented in writing and are held to the highest standards and accountability
