Judge Donald H. Mason took office as a Circuit Court Judge on September 1, 2012 after his appointment to that position by Governor Rick Scott. He has served in Hendry and Glades Counties since his appointment presiding over the criminal, civil, probate, guardianship, family law, domestic violence and drug court dockets. Judge Mason was born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island. He and his family moved to Cape Cod, Massachusetts where he attended and graduated from Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School in 1971.
Judge Mason's commitment to community service began at the age of twenty when he became a police officer in his home town of Yarmouth, Massachusetts. During his career, Judge Mason was the recipient of numerous awards including Officer of the Year, three Exceptional Service Awards, three Meritorious Service awards and three Lifesaving Awards. While serving as a police officer, Judge Mason continued his education. He received an A.S. in Criminal Justice at Cape Cod Community College in 1984, a B.A. in Government from Suffolk University in Boston, Massachusetts in 1986 and his J.D. from the New England School of Law in Boston in 1992. Following graduation, Judge Mason was licensed to practice law in both the Florida and Massachusetts. Judge Mason continued to serve as a police officer after graduation while also working as an attorney in Massachusetts until his retirement after thirty years of service in 2002. During that ten-year period, Judge Mason's civil practice focused in the areas of civil litigation, corporate and business law, land use and zoning and maritime law.
In September, 2003, Judge Mason and his wife, Jane, relocated to Florida where he joined the Office of the State Attorney in the 16th Judicial Circuit. He served as a prosecutor in Plantation Key until November of 2004 when he moved to the State Attorney's Office in the 20th Judicial Circuit. Judge Mason served as a felony prosecutor in Charlotte County, was promoted to head that office on January 1, 2008 and served in that position until appointed to the bench by Governor Scott on September 1, 2012.
Judge and Mrs. Mason have four children and four grandchildren, Liam, Josh, Brady and Noah. They are residents of Charlotte County and love spending their time on the waters of Charlotte Harbor, traveling together and generally spoiling their grandsons rotten. Judge Mason is also an avid cyclist who enjoys in riding in numerous local events such as the Trek Breast Cancer Awareness Ride in Charlotte County, the Tour of North Port and Tour of Cape Coral.
